Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, with more than one million new diagnoses each year. The most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Melanoma is a less common form of skin cancer, but tends to be more aggressive.
Exposure to ultraviolet radiation increases the risk of skin cancer, and sun protection plays an important role in skin cancer prevention. Once skin cancer occurs, it is important to detect and treat it as early as possible in order to obtain the best outcomes.
Advances in surgery and other local treatments for skin cancer have improved treatment effectiveness and cosmetic outcomes. In addition, researchers continue to evaluate new approaches to systemic (whole-body) therapy for melanoma.
Understanding skin cancer treatment options, the role of different doctors specializing in the treatment of skin cancer, and how and when to access new and innovative skin cancer treatment options available through clinical trials is essential in order to achieve the best outcome from skin cancer treatment.
