What is Cancer? |
Cancer is not one disease, but many diseases, each characterized by the uncontrolled growth of cells within the body. Normal cells reproduce in an orderly, controlled fashion on a regular basis.
In some instances, the body's normal regulatory control of cell repair and growth is unable to stop the growth of cells. When this occurs, the abnormal cell growth is discovered and often referred to as a lump, mass, or tumor.
A tumor may be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign tumors differ from cancerous tumors in that cancer has the ability to spread throughout the body.
When cancer cells break away from the primary tumor and travel (via the blood or lymphatic systems) to different sites within the body, the process is called metastasis.
